REFLECTING AN ISLAND TRADITION (Oyster Cove, Kettering, Tasmania) My family has a very long association with Tasmania dating back to the mid 1800’s when we arrived as convicts, sent to Jerusalem Probation Station in Colebrook. Being a large, diverse and beautiful island, Tasmania is surrounded by a number of oceans, seas and straits’. Unsurprisingly Tasmanians have a strong connection with the sea and boating. Having easily the highest boat ownership in Australia there is reputably one boat for every 17 people on the island. Having sailed much of the South-East coast, I have stayed in many of the small anchorages such as this, reflecting the Tasmanian peoples strong relationship with the sea. DELIBLE IMPRESSIONS A painting of a typical, remote Australian billabong, bright, colourful, reflecting in the precious life giving water. A scene unchanged for perhaps tens of thousands of years. Now a familiar jet’s vapour trail dominates the sky as European man has dominated this ancient land, its people and culture. Impressions of footsteps in the mud lead to the billabong with no return. I called this painting ‘Delible Impressions’ because, despite the above mentioned allegories, these impressions man has made on this landscape are transient and will soon disappear. Hopefully for all of us and in spite of modern mans efforts to change our climate, the cycle of renewal will continue for many more thousands of years. Artist's quality oils on stretched canvas. GHOSTS OF THE PAST (Tessellated Pavement, Pirates Bay, Tasmania)) On a recent visit to Tasmania we stayed with family on Eagle Hawk Neck and were taken to see the Tessellated Pavement in Pirates Bay and the infamous Dogline. During our visit a very dense mist descended on the area creating a chilling, eerie atmosphere evoking ghostly imagery of the areas dark and brutal past. In this painting I have tried to capture some of that history and atmosphere. Artist's quality oils on stretched canvas. Approximately 1220mm x 920mm | |
